Appendix A — What changed since version 1.6
Version 2 is a rewrite, not an upgrade. The core idea is unchanged — drag criteria onto a canvas, click the overlap, export the records — and most version 1.6 muscle memory still works. But some things moved, some work differently, and a few are not there.
This appendix is written for people who used version 1.6. It is organized as:
A.1 Still here, unchanged
Everything in this list works the way the 1.6 manual described it:
- The Venn diagram as the primary canvas, with proportional circles and overlaps
- The three-circle limit, and the technique of dragging a selection to a new canvas to go beyond it
- Merging circles by dragging one circle's name label onto another
- Deleting a circle by dragging its name to a trash can
- The Zoom slider and the Scale slider on a Venn
- The count box in the top-right, with a menu for saving and exporting
- The Records / list view, sortable by clicking column headings
- Downloading a selection to Excel or CSV
- Exporting a list to Eloqua
- Scheduling a recurring export
- Pie and bar chart previews on a criterion, with values draggable straight to the canvas
- Saving canvases into folders, and reloading them onto a blank canvas
- Emailing a canvas to a colleague

A.3 Not in version 2
These version 1.6 features have no version 2 equivalent. They are recorded here deliberately, so it is a documented decision whether to rebuild them.
Record Constraints
What it did: an administrator assigned a saved segment or canvas to a specific user as a constraint. Everything that user then did was silently scoped to those records — a rep who only handled EMEA only ever saw EMEA. Users could hold several constraints and choose which was active, per table, and record counts were recalculated per user.
Version 2: nothing equivalent. Access is binary — standard user or administrator — and everyone in a workspace sees the same rows. The only data boundary is the workspace itself.
Workaround today: give each audience its own workspace, or its own datasource whose connection only exposes the relevant rows.
This is the single largest capability gap between 1.6 and 2.x. Anyone who relied on it should raise it with their service representative.
User administration
What it did: Administration → Manage Users listed users, added them, and reset passwords, all inside 4Segments.
Version 2: users, passwords, workspace assignment and the administrator role live in the identity provider. There is no user screen in the product, and no password reset. This is a deliberate move to single sign-on, not an omission — but it does mean the person who used to add users may now need access to a different system.
Country maps other than the United States
What it did: version 1.6 shipped around two dozen single-country maps — Canada, Germany, France (and French regions), Spain, Italy, Australia, India, China, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, South Africa, Thailand, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland — plus a Europe map, selectable per criterion.
Version 2: two maps only — World (countries) and United States (states). The admin dropdown shows a disabled More coming soon… entry, so the framework is there; the map data is not.
Impact: a customer who segmented on German states or Canadian provinces cannot reproduce that view. World and US cover most cases, but not all.
Activity Data criteria
What it did: where an integration imported marketing activity (email sends, opens, click-throughs, form submits, web visits), version 1.6 offered these as criteria with pre-built date ranges — Form Submit in last 1 week / 2 weeks / 1 month / 3 months — and an Activity builder dialog for ad-hoc ones. In that dialog you searched for specific assets (particular emails or forms), dragged them into a list, chose how many times the activity occurred, and picked a time frame: on a date, before or after a date, between two dates, or within / not within the last X days, weeks or months.
Version 2: no activity-specific criteria and no activity builder. Date criteria do exist, with relative operators (in the last N days, more than N months ago, between two dates), but they act on a column, not on an event stream, and there is no way to say "clicked one of these three particular emails".
Workaround today: if activity is flattened into columns in your warehouse — a
last_click_date or an email_opens_90d — version 2 handles it well. If it lives in an
events table, it cannot be segmented on directly, because 4Segments does not join.
Note: the 1.6 manual already flagged Activity Data as unavailable in the 4Comply edition, so this may affect fewer customers than the list suggests.
Dashlets
Covered in A.2 — the arrangeable dashboard is gone, and Home's layout is fixed. Recorded here as well because customers who curated a dashboard of eight dashlets will notice.

Multiple pluggable datasources
Version 1.6 segmented one dataset. Version 2 connects to MySQL, Snowflake and BigQuery side by side, plus the built-in 4Comply source. Each canvas uses one of them; the sidebar groups criteria by datasource. Adding a warehouse is now a self-service admin task with a Test Connection button, not a professional-services engagement.
The 4AI Assistant
Ask questions in plain language, get real numbers back. Find criteria, explain a canvas, report what changed, and build Venn / Matrix / Waterfall / Funnel canvases by describing them. Chapter 10
Change tracking
A nightly job records every criteria value count and every saved segment size, keeping about 120 days of history. That powers three things:

A richer Venn readout
The floating Criteria values legend lists every region with its exclusive count, ends with Total records on canvas, and every row is a selection button. In 1.6 you had to click a region to learn its size.
Saved segments as first-class building blocks
In 1.6 a saved segment became a circle. In version 2 it can also be a waterfall root or a filter on a funnel or map — "show me the funnel, but only for Hot MQLs".
Filter strips on funnels and maps
Drop criteria values (or one saved segment) onto the Filter: strip to scope every stage or region at once, with the AND/OR grouping shown visually.
Waterfall improvements
Double-click drill-down with a ← Back button, an Equal size toggle for unreadable charts, a correct and selectable Other bucket, and a performance warning before the expensive third level.
Matrix improvements
Cells stream in with a live progress count, and clicking a row label or column header selects that entire run.
Chart image export
Canvas ▾ → Export chart produces a PNG, JPG or PDF of any canvas type.
Export columns
Admin → Export Columns picks exactly which columns land in a CSV, Excel or SFTP file, per table — with an X of Y columns selected badge and a filter box.
Connected Systems with field mappings
Version 1.6's integrations were configured outside the product. Version 2 has an admin screen for Eloqua, Marketo and SFTP, including per-table field mappings deciding which identifier is matched on, a connection test, and SFTP host-key pinning so a file is never uploaded to an impostor server.
Scheduled exports, expanded
Now to Eloqua, Marketo or SFTP; daily, weekly or monthly; with Pause and Resume, a last-run outcome badge, failure alert emails, and a Deleted canvas warning when the bound canvas is gone.
Delete guards
Version 1.6 would let you delete something in use. Version 2 checks dependencies first and either blocks the delete, or tells you exactly what will break. Deleting a datasource that owns criteria requires typing its name to confirm.
Multi-workspace switching
One login can hold several workspaces, switchable from the header without signing out. Your role is evaluated per workspace.
Everything else
Nested Library folders · favorites with drag-to-reorder · a configurable idle timeout with a warning toast · dark mode following your OS · canvas thumbnails and a preview overlay · duplicate-name checking when saving · row-cap warnings on truncated exports · recent-activity feed · Save As… for branching a canvas · Open in new canvas straight from a selection.
A.5 Summary for a 1.6 user
If you take three things from this appendix:
- Criteria are now built with dropdowns, not SQL — and value visibility moved into the Admin area.
- Record Constraints and in-app user management are gone. Both are now handled outside 4Segments, and per-user row filtering has no equivalent at all.
- Almost everything else got bigger — more datasources, more export destinations, an assistant, and a system that tells you when your segments move.
