14. Glossary
4AI Assistant — the built-in assistant. Answers questions about your data, finds criteria, explains canvases, and can build Venn, Matrix, Waterfall and Funnel canvases. Cannot modify, delete, export or email. Chapter 10
Administrator — a role, held per workspace, that unlocks the Admin area and the ability to create scheduled exports. Granted in your identity provider, not in 4Segments. 12.10
Canvas — one working surface with one diagram on it. Has a type and lives in a tab. Up to six open at once. Chapter 5
Canvas menu — the Canvas ▾ button in the toolbar: Explain this canvas, Email canvas, Save As…, and Export chart. 7.5
Circle — one criteria value (or saved segment) drawn on a Venn diagram. Its area is proportional to its record count. Maximum three per canvas.
Connected system — a configured export destination: Eloqua, Marketo or SFTP. 12.7
Count box — the Segment button in the toolbar, which shows how many records are in the current selection and how many regions are selected. Clicking it opens the Segment menu. 6.1
Criterion (plural criteria) — one column of one table of one datasource, given a friendly name. A question you can ask about a record. 12.4
Criteria value — one specific answer to a criterion, defined by a condition
(INDUSTRY = 'Technology'). Carries a record count. What you drag onto a Venn.
Dashlet — a version 1.6 concept. Does not exist in version 2; Home's sections are fixed. Appendix A
Datasource — a database 4Segments can query: MySQL, Snowflake, BigQuery, or the built-in 4Comply system source. Everything on one canvas must come from one datasource. 12.2
Digest — an optional weekly email summarizing which segments and values moved. 11.3
Exclusive count — a region's count with all overlaps removed, so regions sum to the total. The legend panel shows these. 4.2
Export Columns — the per-table configuration that decides which columns appear in a CSV, Excel or SFTP export. 12.6
Export rail — a floating panel that appears while you drag a selection, with a button per export destination. Drop the selection on one to export.
Favorite — a starred canvas or segment. Appears in a group at the top of the sidebar and on Home. Only favorited segments get change tracking. 3.5
Filter chip — a criteria value or saved segment dropped on a Funnel's or Map's Filter: strip, scoping every stage or region.
Funnel — a canvas type showing ordered lifecycle stages as a cone. Requires administrator configuration. 5.5
Home — the permanent first tab: recent work, counters, favorites and activity. 2.2
Inclusive count — a circle's total including its overlaps. Shown inside the circle.
Library — the sidebar tab holding saved canvases and saved segments in folders. 3.1
Map — a canvas type showing geographic distribution. Two maps ship: World (countries) and United States (states). Requires administrator configuration. 5.6
Matrix — a canvas type cross-tabulating two criteria. Top seven values per axis. 5.3
Merged circle — two Venn circles combined into one, meaning "records in either". Lives on the canvas; is not a saved segment. 4.6
Normalization — merging one criteria value into a sibling so both count as one. Version 2's answer to dirty values. Does not change your data. 12.5
Other — a waterfall's residual bucket, meaning "this parent, minus all named siblings". Grey, and fully selectable. 5.4
Records list — the modal preview of the actual rows in your selection. Up to 2,000 rows, sortable, with an Export CSV button. 6.2
Region — a clickable area of a diagram: one lens of a Venn, one cell of a matrix, one bar of a waterfall, one stage of a funnel, one country on a map.
Saved canvas — a stored diagram definition, including its selection. Recalculates against live data when reopened. Can drive scheduled exports. 7.2
Saved segment — a stored, named audience definition. Reusable as a Venn circle, a waterfall root, or a funnel/map filter. Not a frozen list of records. 7.3
Scale slider — a Venn-only control that grows smaller circles toward the size of the largest, making them clickable. Once moved, circle areas no longer represent counts. 5.2
Scheduled export — a recurring send of a saved canvas to Eloqua, Marketo or SFTP. Administrator-created, from the Export dialog. Chapter 9
Segment — the records currently selected on a canvas. What gets exported.
Segment menu — opened by clicking the count box: open in a new canvas, save the segment, or export it.
Selection — one or more regions you have clicked. Required before you can export, save a segment, list records, or drag anything off the canvas. 4.4
Snapshot — the nightly record of every criteria value's count and every saved segment's size. Kept about 120 days; powers change tracking and the digest. 11.1
Status bar — the strip below the canvas that tells you what to do next.
Top N — a per-criterion size limit on how many discovered values stay visible. Values beyond it are hidden, never deleted. 12.4.2
Venn diagram — the default canvas type: up to three proportionally-sized, overlapping circles. 5.2
Waterfall — a canvas type showing successive breakdowns, left to right. Up to three levels, ten children per level plus Other. 5.4
Workspace (also tenant) — an isolated set of data, criteria, canvases and settings. Users can belong to several and switch between them; data never crosses. 2.4
Zoom slider — a Venn-only control magnifying the diagram from 100% to 200%.
